We drove up to Flagstaff on Monday for a quick vacation with cooler weather. We left Phoenix at 99 degrees and arrived 2.5 hours later in Flagstaff at 71 degrees. So much nicer. We checked into our hotel (townhome timeshare) and the kids ran around admiring the place. It really shows that we don't stay in hotels very often when Madison, Megan, and Blake all were amazed at the 1 free bag of microwave popcorn sitting in a basket on the counter. The girls were sharing a bedroom and Madison went on and on about her bedroom having a door to the bathroom. Simple pleasures. The place was probably built in the 1980's and needed a renovation, but the kids thought it was the best place ever. After relaxing in the house we walked over to the recreation center to look at the pool, game room, playground, and miniature golf course. While there we played a quick round of miniature golf. Some clouds started rolling in so we headed off for dinner at The Galaxy- a 50's diner.
Everyone slept in on Tuesday and when we woke up we headed for Walnut Canyon for a hike around the 800-1000 year old cave dwellings. That was a lot of fun. We walked down 250 stairs (Blake counted them) then walked along the trail of the cave dwellings. It was amazing to see the smoke marks in some of the dwellings from the fires they used to cook and heat the home that many years ago. I decided that I couldn't have been a cave dweller had I lived in that time. The steep cliffs, narrow trails, and kids playing around them would have given me too much stress. I think I could have lived in a pueblo however.
After leaving the cliffs we headed back to the house for lunch, then Scott took the kids down to the recreation center for arts and crafts and a few games. The girls put there crafting skills to work making a guitar and a flag. When Macy woke from her nap we went swimming and played more miniature golf. Blake decided playing with the family was slowing him down so he left our game and played by himself. We had dinner at a local pizza place and went back to the house for Macy to head to bed.
We woke up early Wednesday morning and left the resort and headed home. Scott had some work meetings and the kids had swimming lessons. The trip was short, but it was so nice to enjoy the cooler weather for a bit.
