Camping

This past Weekend we went camping with the Craig's at Thompson Bear Flats. I was told it would be cold, but that was a little understated. We drove up after church and the weather was perfect. We found a great spot that already had a fire ring and set up camp. It is amazing how much stuff you need for a few days. Once the sun started going down it became quite cool. Scott had planned to have ribs, sausage, and hot dogs for dinner, but the food was taking longer then expected to cook so we had hot dogs and sausage, and then a few hours later the charred ribs were done. The kids enjoyed being able to run around outside- although we did have to mention to Ben and Nolan (more then once) to stay within sight. Those two boys were at home in the dirt. We got a fire going before dinner, and went through a ton of wood. The one thing I really don't like about campfires is how the ash and smoke keep changing directions so you also have to keep moving. Once the sun was down it was really cold so after we had smores we went to bed around 8pm. The kids snuggled down in their sleeping bags and I didn't hear from them until morning. I was sleeping with Blake- so that means I didn't sleep. I was up until 3am just trying to keep Blake comfortable. He kept tossing and turning and coughing. Not fun. Scott didn't get much sleep either- but he will tell you that my talking kept him awake. I think next time I will bring a dvd player into the tent so Blake can watch cartoons if he doesn't feel like sleeping. We woke up at 545am, thanks to Scott's alarm clock going off- nice. At that point our tent was really cold. It hurt to have my face out of the blankets so I buried myself and Blake inside. Blake thought we were trying to play peek-a-boo. Once we got up and the sun came out the weather was great. We enjoyed a breakfast of pancakes, sausage, and hot chocolate and went for a hike. After the hike we decided to head down the trail a bit to try fishing in the creek. As we drove down the hill I remembered being on a similar drive, but discarded the thought until I saw the creek. I remembered that we did a Daddy/Daughter campout there when I was about 14. I remember that campout because my Dad decided we should sleep under the stars without a tent- but it was rather chilly, so my sister's and I slept in the car. Good times. The fishing was not good, so we went on a hike by the creek and the kids really liked that one. After we got back to our campsite we had lunch, played for awhile on a homemade rope swing that Scott crafted on a falling apart tree (a branch later fell on Ben's head), and packed up to go home. I really like how you can go camping in Payson since it is only 90 minutes away and it didn't take up all my gas. We will go again- when the weather is warmer.
